WHO IS THE LIFEBLOOD OF BERLIN’S NIGHTLIFE?

GmbH has compiled a pulsating collection of music from the city’s top musicians for fashion shows

If there’s a common thread in the work of GmbH, the brand based in Berlin and led by Benjamin Huseby and Serhat Isik, it’s the sense of community

Since its establishment in 2016, the label has maintained a reflective relationship with its birthplace, creating attire inspired by the diverse and stylish inhabitants of the German capital, who in turn choose GmbH for their adventures. The heart of this interaction is often the dance floor. In fact, the duo of creative directors were once active members of Berlin’s renowned extensive nightlife, encountering many of the creative partners who contribute to their projects at raves.”

GmbH’s most recent endeavor pays tribute to their profound and intricate connection with music and its creators. Their compilation, “An Anthology of Music for Fashion Shows 2016-2023 Vol. 1,” encapsulates the auditory voyage of the brand’s initial seven years. Huseby elucidates that the number seven holds an almost mystical significance. The aim was to acknowledge the substantial influence and importance of their musical community to GmbH.

"GmbH is a part of our vibrant Brown community, and they are among those who are flourishing and doing commendable work. Prior to us, there was a significant absence of the Brown community in both the music and fashion industries. Now, there’s a wave of empowerment, and we are all contributors to it. Our collective experiences allow us to understand each other. They frequently comment on our culture, and the messages they convey through their work resonate deeply with me.

I composed my track for a GmbH show. It poses a question, a sort of “Why do we even make the effort?” sentiment. We have to work tenfold compared to a European individual, as we begin with a different set of opportunities and have to validate ourselves on a distinct level. I also sent them a few dance tracks, but they chose this one. We are politically in sync—they have always been supportive and helpful to me. Whenever I’ve reached out to them, they’ve been there for me. I know there’s mutual support, and I reciprocate it."

"I encountered Serhat upon my arrival in Berlin, quite unexpectedly through a mutual acquaintance. We were both at the early stages of our careers. I wasn’t even aware that Serhat was involved with GmbH. Despite our close friendship, we consistently supported each other’s work and endeavors. Given that I’m into music and he’s into fashion, there are numerous intersections for these fields.

The track on the album was specifically crafted for their runway show, YLEM. It showcases the countertenor Steve Katona, who both performed and participated in the show. The track is characterized by a compelling beat with an aria in the center that distinguishes the first part from the second. The lyrics are derived from Lucretius’ poem ‘On the Nature of Things,’ which served as the inspiration for Benjamin and Serhat’s runway. The poem’s objective is to liberate men from guilt and the dread of death by proving that fears of divine intervention in this world and post-death soul punishment are unfounded."
