Two decades have passed since Tom Ford’s final show for Gucci, a brand he revitalized with his unique blend of hedonistic tailoring.

His tenure as creative director, beginning in 1994, saw Gucci transformed from a struggling leather goods house into a fashion powerhouse.

 

Ford’s Fall/Winter 2004 collection encapsulates his Gucci era. A standout piece is a coat that now resides in a dealer’s closet in St. Petersburg, Florida. Its bold-shouldered, tiered construction and use of fur and reptile skin deviate from Ford’s earlier minimalist designs. The coat, with its obsidian pony skin back, black leather accents, high collar, thick obi belt, and fox fur skirt, is a testament to Ford’s audacious vision.

 

The collection was characterized by dangerously cinched tailoring and luxurious materials. Russian model Natasha Poly wore the aforementioned coat on the runway, while Swede Adina Fohlin showcased an aubergine skirt suit with a cinched waist and sturdy peplum. 

Eugenia Volodina, another Russian model, donned a python-trimmed fox fur jacket and a wedding-white grosgrain skirt with car-wash pleats, embodying a Bond girl persona.

Ford’s daring approach extended beyond his designs. He once placed a male model in a barely-there G-string and meticulously groomed him for a photoshoot. This audacity was instrumental in elevating Gucci from a $200 million business to a $3.2 billion empire.

Despite his bold persona, Ford, a Texas native, was a self-described “shy” teenager. His exposure to the vibrant disco scene of late '70s New York, including encounters with luminaries like Andy Warhol, influenced his work. He yearned for the era’s visual minimalism and tactile richness, where touch was sensual, and materials like silk, fur, and velvet were in vogue.

This longing is evident in his designs, which continue to inspire the fashion world today.
