Summer is the pinnacle. It’s the zenith of the year—the peak temperatures, peak adrenaline surges, peak SPF required.
From June to August in the Northern Hemisphere, cultural titans clash, vying for attention and listeners. Which tune will be anointed as the summer anthem? Which summer blockbuster will reign supreme at the box office?
In the post-pandemic world, a fresh contest is waged in another cultural arena: the summer aesthetic. Concepts that gained popularity in the early 2020s, like cottagecore and indie sleaze, were lifestyle trends that encompassed not just fashion but also hobbies and activities.
Truly embodying cottagecore meant mastering basket weaving. If you aspired to be indie sleaze, you required a Sony Cyber-shot digital camera. These broad trends are supplanted each summer with highly specific micro ones: tomato girl summer contended with coastal grandmother aesthetic in 2023.
To forecast the ultra-specific, nearly ineffable blend of vibes that will govern summer 2024, the SSENSE team utilized every tool at our disposal.
We tracked Google Trends data observing surges in bratty behavior. We compared TikToks in search of a finance guy. We requested the music streamers for playlists inspired by the Challengers soundtrack and Chappell Roan. We viewed the “recommended for you” films on Amazon Prime Video and fed our favorite lines into ChatGPT.
We compiled all this cultural debris into a comprehensive laundry list of individuals, locations, items, and ideas, and started to categorize it into groups that we input into Midjourney, requesting the AI software to generate images based on our prompts. In partnership with the machine, we unveil the five expansive and peculiarly niche vibes of summer 2024.
The amalgamation of normcore and understated quiet luxury basics has given birth to a new type of American Teenage Dream aesthetic that prioritizes normalcy over a striking fashion statement. It’s a style for a world beyond Brandy Melville, where that denim flannel might secretly be Bottega Veneta leather, and the soundtrack is almost exclusively Chappell Roan.
The intensity of Challengers converges with Olympics excitement in a sultry, summer trend that combines the European vacation vibes of Tomato Girl Summer with the humid, sensual atmosphere of a Spanish seaside evening. It’s post blokecore and post lad-culture, but acknowledges that clubbing—and romance—is a sport.
If you’ve recently searched “American Apparel Disco Pants,” this trend is for you. An evolution of Barbiecore and Y2K, Pop Princess adopts the romantic silhouettes of late aughts and early 2010s It Girls and merges them with the sexy look of today’s Pop Girlies. For those simply living that life.
Quiet luxury isn’t silent enough for the real .01%. The epitome of anonymity unites with soft textures and basic white and beige for a void of beauty.

How do these trends influence fashion choices?
Fashion trends, such as the ones predicted for Summer 2024, significantly influence fashion choices in several ways:
Inspiration and Creativity: These trends provide inspiration for individuals to experiment with their style. They encourage creativity and individuality, allowing people to express themselves through their clothing choices.
Shopping Decisions: Trends often dictate what retailers stock, influencing what consumers buy. If a particular aesthetic is trending, you’ll likely see more of it in stores and online.
Cultural Expression: Fashion trends often reflect broader cultural shifts. For instance, the rise of “normcore” and “quiet luxury” reflects a move towards simplicity and understatement in a post-pandemic world.
Personal Identity: Adopting certain fashion trends can be a way for individuals to align themselves with a particular group or identity. For example, the “American Teenage Dream” aesthetic might appeal to those who value normalcy and understatement.
Influence on Designers: These trends also influence fashion designers in their creation of new collections. Designers might incorporate elements of these trends into their designs, further propagating the trend.
Remember, while trends can guide fashion choices, personal style is unique to each individual. It’s always important to wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident! 😊
